ALGERIA’S MOBILE PHONE SUBSCRIBERS DOUBLED IN 2003
The number of mobile phone subscribers in Algeria has more than doubled since the end of last year and now tops one million for a population of 32 million, official figures showed on Monday.
At mid-August, total subscribers in the North African country’s fast-growing GSM phone market were just over one million, up from 451,000 at the end of 2002, state telecommunications regulatory authority ARPT said.
The vast majority of them were clients of Cairo-based Orascom Telecom , which had 873,000 subscribers against 143,000 for state-run Algerie Telecom, it said in a report carried by the official APS news agency.
