- Tanzania’s Vodacom has launched its network along the Morogoro-Dodoma Highway.
- Zambia’s Celtel opened its network in Mzimba district last week. It also launched a customer promotion in which a 2.5 unit card would be sold at a fixed price of K12, 000. This offer will run until October 31.
- Kenyan mobile phone service provider Safaricom yesterday rolled out over 300 Simu Ya Jamii units outside Nairobi. Safaricom Products Manager, Raja Sarkar, said the roll-out will provide informal settlements and economically disadvantaged subscribers with the benefits of mobile telephony. Sarkar said 107 more units were ready for roll-out to poor urban and rural settlements. It also introduced its Easy 100 cards aimed at helping subscribers with insufficient funds make emergency calls.
- Sonatel’s first quarter results for 2003 show an increase in turnover of 13% on last year and that its Malian subsidiary Ikatel now has 94,000 subscribers.
