SA CRIME WEB SITE GARNERS 24,000 HITS IN FIRST WEEK TO COUNTER GOVT BAN

Digital Content

A web site launched in response to government’s ban on crime statistics has generated 450 entries, and received over 24,000 hits in its first week of operation. Crimestats.co.za was developed and launched by Spero Patricios, MD of Ornico 1 to 1, a Johannesburg software company, and went live on 2 September.

Says Patricios: "I was listening to a radio show about the moratorium on crime statistics, and I just did not agree with not having this kind of information available. The site intends to build knowledge and statistics for the general public, so that they can find out what is going on in their own neighbourhoods."

The site allows for reporting down to street level, in an effort to give users an accurate picture of different types of crimes per area. Patricios says the site plans to include information on support groups and how to handle incidents, as well as success stories from people who have had crimes solved, so as to report the positive and not just the negative.
