SA COMPANY LOOKS SET TO PIONEER POWERLINE COMMS EQUIPMENT

Virtual Technical Consultants (VTC), a small but established Cape-based company operating in the electronics, communication and IT industry, has been developing powerline communications (PLC) equipment for three-and-a-half years, says MD Marius Pistorius. Pistorius says although there is much activity on the PLC front, VTC was first to research and develop the technology over three years ago.

A reticent Pistorius will not part with client details, other than to say SA’s communications and utility sectors are testing the products for emissions, which has implications for distance and signal strength. Private corporate and networking industries are next in line after the initial market has been created.

"Currently, there is a distance limitation of 1km over which one can offer this type of comms, to control emission," says Pistorius. "We will ask for legal restrictions to be relaxed in the event of us needing to increase distances, but since it is in the pilot testing phase, it is not something we are immediately doing."
